Gantry Crane Exhibition by Hands On!

Giant Lever

There's an advantage to good leverage, as visitors discover in this exciting competition.

Visitors on two sides of a giant lever are challenged to a tug-of-war, each side attempting to pull the lever in their direction. The two sides, however, are not equal in opportunity. On one side of the lever, the tug rope is attached six feet from the lever's fulcrum; on the other, the rope is attached only two feet from the fulcrum. Visitors discover that one person on the tall side of the experience can easily outpull several people of equal strength tugging on the short side because of the difference in lever arm distance. Dynamometers on each side of the lever allow visitors to see the ratio of force exerted. A victory bell or light playfully reveals the mechanical advantage of this simple machine.
