Stress Analysis by Hands On!

Stress Analysis

This open-ended testing station is based on methods used in engineering labs to test new design models—in this case, the stress-distributing capabilities of different building members.

The visitor tests different beams, trusses and structures constructed of Lexan by loading them with weights and viewing the changing stress patterns through polarizing filters, which transform invisible stress lines into patterns of color. This exhibit is a highly intuitive and beautiful introduction to structural engineering and the physics of stress.
