Magnetic Hotplates Exhibition by Hands On!

Magnetic Hotplates

Visitors experiment with magnets and electromagnetism on "hotplates" that are programmed to produce magnetic fields similar to those inside an AC motor. In an object bin, visitors find magnets, Slinkeys™ in acrylic tubes, magnetic "worms," and other materials for experimentation. Items placed on top of the hotplate move in different ways based on the pattern of on/off switching that the visitor creates. Visitors control the frequency, amplitude and phase relationship between the electromagnets in each hotplate. The reactions of the object on top of the hotplate give the visitor clues leading to an understanding of phase, frequency, amplitude and wave shape through a direct cause-and-effect process. Includes two magnetic hotplate stations with a shared activity bin. A starter kit of activities is also included.
