Science in Play® celebrates children as capable, confident and enthusiastic science learners and supports the Kentucky Science Center’s inspirational initiative to get visitors to “Do Science Everywhere.” This progressive, next-generation learning experience is rich in loose parts and open-ended experiments that build 21st century learning skills through the power of play. With this exhibition, Hands On! helped KSC fulfill its commitment to help parents grow proficient learners and build school readiness in its youngest visitors.

Hands On! with C.W. Shaw first collaborated with KSC to create two temporary, experimental versions of Science in Play® to test and evaluate exhibit ideas. The new, permanent version of Science in Play® builds on what KSC and Hands On! learned from those experiments. Pilot concepts such as the math-oriented “Shapes & Stuff Store” were expanded, and we added new exhibits to round out the Science in Play® experience, including the “Happy Climber” to foster gross motor skills and “Grow Zone,” a dedicated interactive area for toddlers 3 and under.

Since opening to the public in July 2015, the permanent Science in Play® has transformed KSC’s entire first floor of exhibition space into an exhilarating, 11,000 square foot expanse of exploration, skill-building and fun.

“We chose the perfect partner in Hands On! to bring Science in Play® to fruition. I appreciate the way they listened as we worked to define what was important to us, then suggested approaches that accentuated, magnified and expanded the best of each idea. Hands On! helped us deliver a project that is smart, inspiring...and working!”
